Holland America Line

***Important Policy Information***

Cruise Restart Policies as of August 4, 2021

Holland America Line is gearing up to restart cruising out of Port of San Diego in California beginning with a season of cruises to Mexico, Hawaii and along the California coast aboard Koningsdam and Zuiderdam. The season is expanding with the addition of six new cruise departures for Zuiderdam and two new cruises on Koningsdam, offering a total of 40 cruises from San Diego from September 2021 through April 2022.

With the resumption of service on the West Coast, Holland America Line also is looking toward cruising in the Caribbean with four ships. All sailing roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the season will begin Oct. 23, 2021, with Nieuw Amsterdam. The ship will be joined by the new Rotterdam Nov. 3, Eurodam Nov. 14 and Nieuw Statendam Nov. 21. Caribbean cruises range in length from four to 14 days, span the entire region and include a call at Half Moon Cay, Holland America Line’s award-winning private island.

See our Holland America Restart page for details and rates.

Will I need to be vaccinated?

All 2021 cruises are available for guests who have received their final dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to the beginning of the cruise and have proof of vaccination and proof of a negative, medically observed viral COVID-19 test (PCR or antigen) taken within 72 hours of their embarkation.

For guests embarking in Europe, we are conducting mandatory COVID-19 antigen testing at the pier pursuant to the EU Healthy Gateways Protocols. This test will be complimentary, and a negative result will satisfy our new testing requirements.

Requirements for 2022 published itineraries will be announced on a rolling basis, prior to final payment due dates, in accordance with CDC guidelines and as updated travel protocols are provided by governments, ports and public health authorities.

For cruises departing from the United States, the CDC requires both vaccines in a 2-dose series to be of the same type. They also accept mixing mRNA vaccines only (each dose is from either Pfizer and Moderna.) No other combinations are considered fully vaccinated.

For cruises departing outside of the United States, you may be regarded as fully vaccinated if you have received your first dose of AstraZeneca followed by a single dose of mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) to complete the 2-dose series.

Will I need to wear a mask onboard?

It is strongly encouraged that guests wear face masks when in public spaces indoors. ALL guests will be required to wear a face mask – with no exceptions – in elevators and in designated indoor entertainment areas, all retail shops, and in the casino except when eating or drinking. Guests will also be required to wear face masks prior to being seated in our main dining rooms and in the buffet area, and occasionally in other designated areas where larger number of guests may congregate. As a reminder, masks are required during embark and debark in the terminal, and masks should also be worn during the debarkation process on board.

Paused Sailings

Working in close coordination with the government of Greece, Holland America Line has received approval to restart cruising from Piraeus (Athens) in August with four departures aboard Eurodam. Bookings for these cruises are now open.

While Holland America Line continues to work with governments and port authorities in correlation with the phased resumption of cruising, it is canceling the remainder of the summer 2021 European sailings aboard two ships, Nieuw Statendam and Volendam. This affects cruises that were scheduled to depart from September through November, along with the Collectors’ Voyages (combined cruises) associated with those departures.

Volendam departures from November 25 through and including December 23, 2021 have been cancelled.

Zaandam’s departure on December 20, 2021 have also been cancelled.

In addition, after an expected on-schedule delivery from the Fincantieri shipyard July 30, Rotterdam will remain in non-guest operations until its Sept. 26 cruise from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Plans for Rotterdam’s naming ceremony are being finalized.

Guests currently booked on canceled Nieuw Statendam and Volendam departures automatically will be moved to a 2021 cruise on Eurodam in the Mediterranean, beginning with the August 15 cruise through the October 30 transatlantic crossing, and receive a $100 Onboard Spending Credit per person.

Nieuw Statendam and Volendam guests also can choose to move to an equivalent cruise in 2022 at the 2021 fare or receive a Future Cruise Credit of 110% of any cash paid that will be placed in the guest’s loyalty account.

Guests currently booked on a canceled Rotterdam voyage automatically will be rebooked to an equivalent sailing in 2022 at the 2021 fare paid, or they can choose to receive a Future Cruise Credit of 110% of any cash paid.

Holland America Line is notifying all guests and their travel advisors of their options. Guests impacted by Nieuw Statendam, Volendam or Westerdam cancellations should confirm their selection of replacement voyages or cancellation options no later than July 15, 2021.

Health and Safety Protocols

Enhancing Health Screenings

Taking steps to implement COVID-19 appropriate pre-embarkation screening, including:

  • mandatory enhanced pre-embarkation health screenings, including 100% testing for  COVID-19 prior to embarkation, touchless temperature checks and health questionnaires, in accordance with the latest guidelines
  • Holland America will refer anyone with signs and symptoms of COVID-19 , or who are identified at-risk, for additional medical screening before allowing them to board
    • secondary screenings (and health checks throughout the cruise) when necessary
    • contact tracing is planned for every cruise

Responsible Physical Distancing

  • Across the fleet Holland America is making it easier to practice physical distancing by managing the timing, size and flow of groups in onboard venues and for events and helping you make informed decisions about what to do on board. Entertainment programs and restaurants will be designed to enhance physical distancing.
  • Physical distancing will also be maintained throughout check-in and embarkation, and will be required in terminals, on board ships, on private islands, and during shore excursions.

Masks

When physical distancing can’t be maintained, or when mandated by public health authorities, masks will be required on board, at private islands, and during shore excursions. Masks must be worn in terminals, during embarkation and disembarkation.

It is always recommended that guests wash or replace their mask daily and choose a good quality, ideally medical grade, standard mask. Please note that visors and face shields will not be accepted as a substitute for a face mask.

These new requirements are being implemented to protect guests and crew while onboard. Several destinations have implemented their own requirements and all guests will be required to follow the protocols in each destination visited. It is expected that these requirements will be temporary and your cooperation is appreciated. Everyone at Holland America looks forward to welcoming you aboard.

Personal Hygiene

Guests will be encouraged to use the hand-washing sinks and hand sanitizer dispensers at venue entrances and in high-traffic areas throughout the ship. Guests will be asked to follow health information about the ways to stay healthy on board and when ashore through daily programming, entertainment systems, announcements, in-stateroom literature and the app. There will be no self-service for meals. Holland America will do the serving for you.

Safe Shoreside Experiences

Holland America is working with local authorities, destinations and tour operators so that the enhanced health and safety measures on board are maintained ashore. Princess will follow the health protocols for every port visited. There may be a reduction in the capacity of excursions and tour vehicles. Only shore excursions that comply with prescribed protocols will be permitted, with strict adherence required of all guests and denial of re-boarding for any guests who do not comply.
